The World Wide Web celebrates a milestone Tuesday as it has now been around for 25 years. Many people use the web and internet synonymously but the two are different. The internet is the network that connects everything that is available online while the world wide web is the platform that connects websites to the internet.
Back in the 1980s and 1990s when people were using AOL and other services they connected to the internet using a dial-up modem. Once connected to the internet, AOL, Netscape and other services connected people to the world wide web by using the internet.
I'm sure that sounds a little confusing to some but things haven't changed since then.
Without the web, regular folks wouldn't be able to use Google, Facebook and Amazon's websites. The connection would be just digits and computer language.
So the www birthday is significant.
Do you remember the first website you visited? Chances are good it was AOL, Netscape or Yahoo.
The number of websites today is staggering.
1.07 billion websites are online now, but at least 75% of them are not active. A large number of websites are useless or just plain weird. I mean an entire site devoted to a gif of a man getting slapped in the face by an eel. That's what people may stumble upon while they waste time browsing the web.
There are 3.4 billion people using the internet today which is impressive. There are 7.4 billion people living in the ww (wide world). So 4 billion people are not using, or do not have access to the internet.
That's beyond comprehension for most of us in the United States. Just imagine your life without the internet. It would be difficult to do your banking or buy gasoline. Convenience stores and banks rely on the internet to keep track of who owns what. Many home security systems and televisions would not be able to operate the way they do now.
Facebook is connecting the rest of the world to the internet through its internet.org . So far, Facebook claims, it's connected 25 million people to the web who did not have access before.
Life without the internet and specifically the world wide web is far different, practically unrecognizable. Is the internet and the web the most important invention of the 20th century? It may or may not be more important than the automobile, airplane, television but is definitely in the conversation.
