New study shows road debris cause of most crashes

Posted: Updated:

A study released Thursday by AAA finds thousands of crashes on America's roads are being caused by road debris.

The study revealed road debris was a factor in more than 200,000 police-reported crashes from 2011-2014.

Those crashes resulted in about 39,000 injuries and 500 deaths.

The study also found two-thirds of all road debris is actually caused in some way by a vehicle, either from not securing a load properly, a part falling off a vehicle or debris from tire blow outs.

AAA is calling on drivers to properly secure their loads, and to maintain their vehicles in an effort to prevent dangerous debris from making its way onto the roads.
