CHATTANOOGA (AP) - The Tennessee Department of Transportation has denied proposals to build a new toll bridge across the Tennessee River northeast of Chattanooga.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports ( ) that TDOT determined that the toll would need to be more expensive than most people would be willing to pay and that growth in the area around Soddy-Daisy in northern Hamilton County has been slower than expected.

Tennessee lawmakers in 2007 passed legislation allowing TDOT to recommend up to two toll projects in the state, one bridge and one road.

The original study performed on the proposed bridge near Soddy-Daisy several years ago found that the span could be feasible, but more recent population forecasting and surveys of residents reversed those findings.

TDOT is halting any further work on the project.
