A sewer project that was expected to close Cassandra Smith Road for three weeks has been delayed for a year.

But planned road improvements scheduled to happen along with the sewer upgrades will take place on Cassandra Smith Road, according to a news release.

The City of Chattanooga’s Department of Public Works gave contractors a tight timeline to ensure the road would reopen before nearby Big Ridge Elementary School was back in session for the year.

The discovery of mass amounts of rock that must be removed altered the Public Works' timeline.

Delays would have significantly impacted school traffic and the cost to expedite the work before the school year.

Only the Cassandra Smith Road portion of this sewer project is being delayed until next summer, which will not impact customers in the area as sewer service will continue uninterrupted.

Paving of Cassandra Smith Road is still scheduled to be completed this month between Stage Coach Run subdivision and Hamill Road. Department of Public Works crews are currently making base repairs in preparation for this resurfacing. The preparation and paving project will be managed with localized lane closures, and there may be some intermittent delays.
