90-year-old man dies in motorcycle accident on ‘The Dragon’
The roadway is famous for its 318 curves and regularly attracts motorcycle enthusiasts.
A 90-year-old Indiana man riding on the back of a three-wheeled motorcycle was killed and the driver injured Wednesday afternoon after crashing along a section of U.S. Highway 129 known as "The Dragon."
Ira S. Hobdy of Indianapolis died at the scene while Tonya Jean Hobdy, 55, was taken to Blount Memorial Hospital and then the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment, according to the Blount County Sheriff's Office.
Tonya Hobdy remained in serious condition Thursday morning, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
The pair were headed south near mile marker 1 when Tonya Hobdy lost control of the 2011 Harley Davidson trike in a curve, went off the right side of the road and down a steep embankment at about 1:45 p.m. Both were wearing Department of Transportation-approved motorcycle helmets.
