UPDATE: I-24 hole patch completed; all lanes now open

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: The Tennessee Department of Transportation has completed the emergency repair work to the Interstate 24 bridge near Chestnut Street.

The completion of the work means the both lanes of eastbound I-24 are now open to traffic, which should help the remainer of Memorial Day traffic pass through that section of the interstate unimpeded.

PREVIOUS STORY: Drivers can expect a significant traffic backup after a large hole formed on the Interstate 24 eastbound bridge over Chestnut Street in Chattanooga. This is because TDOT closed one lane of traffic on Sunday.

TDOT's Bridge Repair group will be looking into a temporary fix so that the lane can be reopened soon, according to Jennifer Flynn, a spokeswoman for TDOT.

Crews are hoping to fix the issue in time for Monday's holiday traffic, but be prepared for delays.

Flynn said emergency repairs were done on this bridge previously, but in a different location. A project is in the works to replace the entire deck of the bridge later this year.
