UPDATE: The Bradley County Sheriff's Office said on Sunday that the man who was run over by a tractor has died. It happened on Kincannon Lane in Georgetown.
The owner of the farm said the accident happened in the back portion of the farm. 63-year-old Donald "Kirby" Howard was cutting hay when he was suddenly run over by a tractor.
In a matter of minutes, Howard was fighting for his life.
"It's very rare that you have the ambulances, the firetrucks, Life Force, everything out here. It's very, very rare," Janet Bunch, a neighbor said.
Bunch lives a few houses down from where the accident happened.
"My husband and I were walking and saw him mowing the hay up on the hill and by the time we walked to the end of Kincannon Lane, visit a few minutes with neighbors and came back, the accident had already happened," Bunch said.
Investigators said the tractor, which came to a stop after hitting a tree, was found a couple of feet away from Howard. He was taken to Tennova Medical Center and then to Erlanger Medical Center.
The U.S. Army veteran later died there on Sunday.
"I've been praying for them. The best I know how," Dorothy Beaty, another neighbor said.
Beaty, Bunch's mother-in-law, also knew Howard because he would do farm work for her too. Neighbors told Channel 3 they aren't sure how the accident happened since Howard had been working on farms for years.
"It's one of those tragic things that happened that nobody could foresee at all. We're all very concerned for the family and everything because this was his livelihood," Bunch said.
Officials said at some point the tractor made contact with the man while he was off of it. They are investigating how the tractor ran him over. The tractor was found a couple of feet away from where the victim was laying, and the tractor had engaged a tree.
Deputies said there won't be a criminal investigation into what happened. Instead, they're calling it a tragic accident.
Funeral arrangements are set for Howard. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. in the parlor of Companion Funeral Home. There will also be a celebration of life on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Companion Funeral Home.
Howard drove a truck for over thirty-four years serving numerous local business including Bishop Baking, Cooke’s Manufacturing and Brown Stove to name a few. He was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army after faithfully serving his country, according to his obituary.
