Meigs Co. beats Silverdale 8-5 to win first state title in school history

The Meigs County softball team won their first Class A state title Friday after a 8-5 win against Silverdale Baptist Academy.

The Lady Tigers fought their way through the winner's bracket all week in Murfreesboro for the TSSAA state softball tournament.

Silverdale Baptist, the winner of the loser's bracket, had to beat Meigs County twice in order to claim the title. The Lady Seahawks did just that and forced a second championship game Friday night after Elise Pearson's grand slam helped give Silverdale a 6-0 win in the first game.

The Lady Tigers then pounced right back in the second game. Tennessee Lady Vols commit, Ashley Rogers, blasted a home run over the left field fence in the first inning to help give Meigs a 3-1 lead.

Silverdale brought it within one in the third, after a Lindsey Newell's push bunt to second brought home Ali Birchfield for the Seahawks score.

But the Lady Tigers were hard to stop at the plate.

Junior Madison Crabtree hit a home run in the third to make it 4-2, and sophomore Lindsey Ward followed it up with a two-run homer to make it 6-2.

"It was the biggest win ever and we are as proud as we can be" said Meigs Co. head coach Jeff Davis. "We battled and battled and looked what happened. The girls have lots of heart. We could've quit after today's first game, but we came back and swung the bat and didn't give up"
