Air quality alert issued Tuesday for East Tennessee

Posted: Updated:

An air quality alert has been issued for East and Middle Tennessee on Tuesday.

The Code Orange Air Quality Alert means ozone levels are expected to reach an air quality index (AQI) level that's "unhealthy for sensitive groups."

Tuesday's alert covers Knoxville/Great Smoky Mountains, Chattanooga and Nashville.

The general public likely won't be affected but those with lung disease, older adults and children are at a greater risk from exposure to ozone. People with heart and lung disease, older adults and kids are at greater risk from the presence of particles in the air.

Members of "sensitive groups" should consider limiting or rescheduling strenuous outdoor activities until the air quality improves.
