Volunteers salute to the brave in Catoosa County

Posted: Updated:
RINGGOLD, GA (WRCB) -

If you drive through downtown Ringgold you'll notice the city has gone red, white and blue to salute our nation's fallen heroes.

In honor of the upcoming Memorial Day holiday volunteers in Ringgold raised more than a thousand flags to remember fallen service members from Catoosa County.

This morning volunteers began posting flags that will line the streets of Ringgold.

"Festival of Flags" is one of the city's oldest traditions to salute those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Every year before Memorial and Veteran's days volunteers raise flags that are held by wooden crosses -- each with the name of a fallen soldier. Volunteers say this event is a great reminder of our freedom.

Festival of flags started in the 70's with just nine flags. This year organizers say they raised about 1,400 full sized American flags throughout Ringgold.

Although, the flags just went up the city is already asking for volunteers to help take them down in a few weeks. If you're interested in helping out you can contact the City of Ringgold.
