Vehicle fire causes hazmat spill on Hwy 58

HAMILTON COUNTY, TN (WRCB) -

A vehicle fire on Highway 58 stalled traffic during the morning commute on Monday. 

Highway 58 Volunteer Fire Department and Hamilton County Hazmat officials responded to a vehicle fire and hazardous materials spill at the 6900 block of Highway 58.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they confirmed a Chevy Minivan was fully involved with fire with a fuel spill on the roadway. Highway 59 VFD requested Hamilton County Hazmat team to respond to assist with the containment of the 20 gallons of fuel on the highway. 

Highway 58 VFD Chief, Brent Maffey reported the owner of the vehicle explained he was having mechanical problems and caught fire while driving down the highway. He escaped without injury. 

Firefighters and Hazmat officials we able to contain the 20 gallons of gas with oil/gas absorbent boom from spilling into the Chickamauga Lake.
