A veterans group in Springfield plans to honor the life Marine Gunnery Sergeant Thomas J. Sullivan, killed in the July 16 terrorist attack in Chattanooga.

According to the group’s Facebook page, the Springfield Veterans Activities Committee will award its Lt. J. Frank Murphy Medal of Valor posthumously to Sullivan in a May 27 ceremony at city hall in Springfield.

The group awards the honor to a Springfield resident each year who risks their life in saving others.

According to the website Masslive.com, the award is named in honor of a Springfield native who led a 1946 raid in the Philippines to capture a Japanese prison camp and rescue 511 survivors of the Bataan Death March.

Last month, Sullivan’s family was awarded a Purple Heart in his honor.
