Lookouts drop rain-delayed game to Pensacola, 5-4

Posted: Updated:

(Lookouts Media Relations)- The Lookouts and a handful of fans hung on through a brief rain delay to attempt a comeback Thursday night against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, but ultimately fell one run short, losing 5-4 and leaving the tying run at second base in the bottom of the ninth.

Chattanooga scored first when Ryan Walker poked a single through the middle of the infield to drive in Zack Granite in the home half of the first inning. The lead wouldn’t last though, as starting pitcher Aaron Slegers struggled with his control, walking four and allowing as many runs through four and a third innings.

Mike Strong threw 1.2 innings as the first arm out of the bullpen, and gave up the fifth and final Pensacola run of the evening in the sixth inning, right after Lookouts C Stuart Turner and OF Shannon Wilkerson hit back-to-back homeruns to bring Chattanooga within one.

The rain picked up in the Lookouts half of the sixth inning, delaying the game and the Chattanooga offense temporarily, before the tarp came off the field and the game picked back up after a near 45 minute pause.

In the final three innings, Luke Westphal would give the Lookouts every opportunity to come from behind, pitching three shutout innings of relief while allowing only two baserunners (one walk, one hit) and striking out four.

It wasn’t until the bottom of the ninth that the offense finally broke onto the scoreboard again, starting with a leadoff walk by TJ White and a single by Turner to make it first and third with no outs. Pensacola allowed the Lookouts to cut the lead in half on a Wilkerson ground ball, opting instead to pick up two outs with a 4-6-3 double play. With two outs, Zack Granite picked up his second hit with a line drive single into left field, eventually getting within two bases of tying the game with his second stolen base of the evening and fifteenth of the season. Pensacola reliever Matt Magill got Ryan Walker swinging to end the Lookouts comeback hopes and win their third game of the series.

The final game against Pensacola starts Friday night at 7:15 pm, with RHP Ryan Eades (1-2, 5.70) getting the start for Chattanooga opposite of Blue Wahoo starter Amir Garrett (3-2, 1.26).  Gates for Fireworks Friday and Rally Towel Giveaway night open at 6:00 pm.
