TN man facing new charges over Muslim assault plot

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA  (AP) - An eastern Tennessee man accused of planning to burn down a mosque in a small Muslim enclave in New York is now facing more federal charges.

Sixty-four-year-old Robert Doggart pleaded not guilty in July to one charge of solicitation to commit a civil rights violation.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press (http://bit.ly/23s7ABx ) reports that a grand jury on Tuesday also indicted Doggart on one count of solicitation to commit arson of a building and two counts of threat in interstate commerce charges.

Authorities believe Doggart spent months plotting an assault on a Muslim community outside Hancock, New York. He was arrested in April 2015.

Doggart's attorney Garth Best couldn't be reached for comment.

Doggart, who has been under house arrest in Sequatchie County, is scheduled to appear in a Chattanooga federal court on June 3.
