Police increase patrols after fatal stabbings at Cleveland apartments

Time hasn't healed much for residents of Springbrook Apartments in Cleveland.

Thursday marks two weeks since two women, both named Crystal, were stabbed to death inside one of the units. A third victim, Anthony Beck, was critically injured.

"It just doesn't seem like it's been two weeks. It seems like it just happened yesterday," said resident Angela Knox.

One of the victims, 33-year-old Crystal Canino, was known as a good neighbor.

"We're used to seeing her walking through here every day. She's always got a smile on her face," Knox said. "It's just weird, her not being here anymore."

Karen Farris was friends with victim Crystal York, who was 35.

"It's been a nightmare," said Farris, "not just for the families, but for friends, also."

Police charged 24-year-old Stephen Jacob Reed with second degree murder. He was a familiar face in the complex, with a violent criminal history.

Bradley County 911 records show police have responded to Springbrook 250 times in the past year, with 11 more calls occurring over the past two weeks.

"Evil is everywhere. It's not just here in this complex," Farris said. "It doesn't matter if you live in a subdivision or if you live in a mansion. It's everywhere."

Tenants said it's not unusual to see an argument, or deal with an occasional car break-in. Otherwise, they're a tight-knit community.

"It's a really nice place to live," said Charles Knox. "It shattered the whole community when that happened. We never expected nothing like that to happen. But, I guess it has no bearing on where you're at."

Both women were moms of two. Friends say this Mother's Day will be tough.

"They miss their mom right now, and they're taking it really hard," Angela Knox said of Canino's children. "Their mom not being here, and Mother's Day being Sunday, it's gonna be hard on them."

"It's hard on everybody around here."

Reed is being held in the Bradley County Jail. His bond is set at $500,000.
