UPDATE: All lanes on Interstate 75 now reopened in Whitfield County at mile marker 340

Posted: Updated:

All lanes on Interstate 75 south in Whitfield County near mile marker 340 are now back open.

An accident on I-75 southbound caused a tractor trailer to catch fire.

Georgia State Patrol dispatch says a driver of a Chevy Impala lost control of their vehicle and traveled into the right lane, striking a tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer driver swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid the passenger car, and it traveled off the right side of the road. The trailer hit a tree, traffic sign pole, and then overturned. The tractor trailer caught fire which ignited its load of aerosol cans.

The tractor trailer driver, Keith L. Yakel, 39,  was transported to Erlanger with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the passenger, Anthony D. Turner, 45, car was uninjured.  He was charged with Too Fast for Conditions and Failure to Maintain Lane.  Authorities say that weather could have played a factor in the driver losing control.

GSP tells Channel 3 that one southbound lane was opened between mile marker 341 and 342.

The accident happened around noon.  Seven hours later all lanes are back open.

Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident
