Georgia man drowns at Abrams Falls in Smokies

A 59-year-old Georgia man drowned in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Thursday, authorities said.

According to park spokeswoman Dana Soehn, rangers and members of the Blount Special Operations Response Team recovered the body of Jitendra Patel, of Roswell, Ga., just after 8 p.m. in the water below Abrams Falls.

Patel, who was hiking with a group of friends, reportedly slipped into the water near the falls at about 12:10 p.m., authorities said in a news release.

Just after 1 p.m., rangers got a report that he had been under water for more than 90 minutes, Soehn said.

According to the park's website, Abrams Falls is 20 feet high, with a long, deep pool at its base.
