A Soddy Daisy man is facing a list of charges after police say he drove through an elementary school playground while children were playing.

Police were called to Daisy Elementary shortly after noon Wednesday when a man drove onto the playground behind the school. Teachers yelled at the driver to stop in an attempt to protect the 80 children on the playground at the time. The driver stopped his SUV and told the school employees he was sorry before driving away from the school.

Police later stopped the vehicle driven by 24-year-old Michael Johnson. The officer noted Johnson’s slurred speech and bloodshot eyes. Officers also found a small bag of marijuana in Johnson’s car.

Johnson failed a sobriety test and was taken into custody on charges of driving under the influence and reckless endangerment.

Johnson is being held at the Hamilton County Jail without bond.

According to a police report, this is not the first time Johnson has faced a DUI charge.
