Antigo Shooting: Gunman Opens Fire Outside of Wisconsin High-School Prom

Posted: Updated:

A gunman shot two students outside of a Wisconsin high school's prom on Saturday night, authorities said.

The incident took place outside of Antigo High School at around 11 p.m. local time (12 a.m. ET).

Antigo Police Chief Eric Roller said the suspect showed up with a rifle and opened fire outside the prom, wounding two students who were exiting the event.

"Officers were in the parking lot patrolling the activities and heard the shots," Roller said in a statement. "An officer immediately fired upon the shooter, stopping the threat."

He declined to give names or ages of the victims or shooter, saying only that families have been notified and that the shooter is in custody.

A local hospital earlier confirmed it had received three shooting victims from the incident.

Aspirus Langlade Hospital said one gunshot victim was treated and released and that two others were transferred to another facility, the hospital told NBC News. It declined to comment on the conditions of the three.

Police said that all students attending the prom have been sent home following a lockdown after the shooting.
