Chattanooga Police increased patrols over the weekend due to a rise in violence. CPD said they arrested eight gang members or potential gang members. Police arrested Demario Parks, 23, Delaney Maddox, 25, Marquise Burress, 21, Devontae Billingsly, 21, and Derrick Shelton, 24. CPD said charges range from Possession of Firearm with Intent to go Armed, Evading Arrest, and Criminal Trespassing.

Police seized nine illegal firearms between Friday night and Monday morning. CPD stated it was above 2015's daily illegal firearm seizure.

CPD included that three vehicles associated with shootings or shots fired were recovered.

Police said they received information that there would be several shootings involving multiple and specific people. They said many of these shootings did not occur. Michael Voyals sits on his front porch watching officers patrol the same street where he heard gun shots ring out Saturday afternoon. He was one of the first to call 911. “I saw a car stop right there, and start shooting that way. It was a Chevy Impala with tinted windows, silver,” said Voyals.

The first shooting happened on O'Rear Street around 1 a.m. The second, just one block away on Taylor Street.  The third happened 5 miles away on East 27th Street. “It's getting dangerous to sit on your front porch and you don't know when a stray bullet may come through the air and hit you.”

Last week, someone shot and killed gang member Robert Jackson III outside SkyZoo Nightclub. Police say that has triggered an all-out gang war of retaliations. “Not in our town, violence will be absolutely unacceptable and we will do everything in our power to prevent it,” said Chattanooga Police Chief Fred Fletcher.  The police chief- himself- joined the patrol throughout the city. Others will work overtime. “We held over our dayshift and evening shift to give us more officers at the most important times. We brought in overtime officers and used data and relationships to put the right people at the right place at the right time looking for targets.”

As officers work to end the violence Fletcher’s message is clear to the individuals putting neighbors on edge. “If you are in a gang, who is allowing this violence, we will find you, and put you in jail for something.”

All shooting victims are expected to be okay. In the two latest shootings the suspect is described as being in a light blue or silver Chevy Impala. If you have any information you are asked to contact the Chattanooga Police Department at 423-698-2525.
