Mocs Show Improvement in Second Scrimmage

Posted: Updated:

( The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team was on Davenport Field at Finley Stadium, taking part in the second scrimmage of spring practice today.  The Mocs ran through 88 plays that showed off lots of progress from last week's scrimmage.

UTC was without starting linemen Corey Levin and Hunter Townson, who sat out due to illnesses.  The defensive line took full advantage with five sacks and nine more tackles-for-loss.  Senior Vantrel McMillan led the way with three sacks, while freshman Telvin Jones had a sack and a TFL.

Despite the defense getting in the backfield, the offense still managed to maintain possession and move the ball.  Junior quarterback Alejandro Bennifield was 13-20 passing for 156 yards and no picks.  His counterpart and classmate Tyler Roberson ran 12 times for 70 yards.

"I thought it was good, pretty clean," stated head coach Russ Huesman.  "We did some good things on both sides of the ball.  I thought Alejandro looked really good and we ran the ball hard.

"I thought we got a lot out of this scrimmage."

Roberson made the first big play of the day when he hooked up with sophomore Alex Trotter on 2nd and 14 from their own 38.  After catching a short pass, Trotter made two impressive moves before nearly out running the secondary.  He was forced out of bounds at the 13 for a 49-yard gain.

Six plays later, Trotter found the endzone on a five-yard run.  He finished with five catches for 56 yards and five carries for 17 yards and the score.

Roberson broke loose on another big play later in the scrimmage.  He ran for 51 yards on 1st and 10 from his own 36. He guided the second unit most of the day and was 6-12 for 70 yards in the air.

Sophomore Kyle Nalls had the next big play, a 39-yard run on 2nd and 6 from the 46.  Nalls went on to put up 47 yards on eight carries.

One of the last highlights of the day came from a position that doesn't normally catch a pass.  Sophomore tight end Bailey Lenoir hauled in a reception from Bennifield, ran over a defender on the near side and was finally forced out of bounds 50 yards later.  He made two catches in today's session, finishing with 59 receiving yards.

There was a bit of a buzz on the sideline with former Moc and current Jets defensive back Buster Skine visiting his alma mater.  He is about to begin his sixth season in the NFL, but spent this afternoon watching his old team.

"It was great to see Buster," added Huesman.  "He came to the Atlanta alumni function and it was good to see him there.  He is going to talk to the team tomorrow morning.
"We are so proud of him with what he has accomplished and what he's done."

The Mocs have three more practices before the Spring Game on April 23.  Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. at Finley Stadium.
