Woods Earns SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week Honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C.---Sophomore Megan Woods is this week’s General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week the league announced Wednesday. Woods won the SoCon Women’s Golf Championship this past Monday.

It was the first win of her career, and it came in exciting fashion. She won a five-hole playoff over conference co-player of the year Alice Chen of Furman. The duo’ dual feature par, par, par and birdie through four holes before Woods’ 3-foot par putt on the par 5 fifth hole proved to be the winner.

The 4.0 student in Accounting is the sixth Chattanooga student-athlete to capture the award. She joins Derrick Crane (Oct. 14), Catherine Chason (Nov. 18), John Lampe (Nov. 25), Eric Robertson (Dec. 23) and Alicia Payne (March 9).

Woods’ 2-over 218 tied for her career best in claiming her first collegiate win. She played -1 through the five holes with both players birdieing the par 3 fourth hole. Chen rolled in a 10’ effort ahead of Woods’ own from three feet. They matched shot for shot throughout.

The duo laid three from 85-90 yards out on the par 5 fifth. Woods hit to 15 feet pin high left. Chen just rolled over the back. Her birdie roll was four feet short.

Woods’ own birdie try missed by about three feet. Chen missed for par, Woods did not.

“It’s a great feeling,” Woods shared after the event. “I came into the tournament hoping that would be the case, and it’s awesome to walk away with this. Especially after a five-hole playoff.

“Alice is a great player, I feel like every shot was equal. She made a great putt on four. It really just feels great to get the win.”
