Penguin nesting season underway at the Tennessee Aquarium

Posted: Updated:

Penguin nesting season is underway at the Tennessee Aquarium.

The season was set to start around April 1st. During this time, all of the Gentoo and Macaroni penguins are rounded up for a trip to the Aquarium's veterinarian.

On April 5th, several hundred pounds of "magic rocks" are set to be placed out for the penguins.

The placement of the rocks trigger nest-building activities that usually last until the first eggs start appearing a few weeks later.

Both Gentoo and Macaroni penguins build rock nests as a form of courtship and bonding.

Nesting season is a fun time for activities at the Tennessee Aquarium, and a time to observe some of the most peculiar penguin behaviors as they mate and bond with each other.

Last year's nesting season resulted in one new Macaroni penguin, and three baby Gentoo penguins.
