Opening Day in MLB

Posted: Updated:

(AP)- The 2016 major league baseball season began on a sunny but cool day in Pittsburgh as the Pirates beat the Cardinals 4-1. Winning pitcher Francisco Liriano tied a club record with 10 opening day strikeouts.
The day's second game featurs Toronto playing at Tampa Bay. Just before the game the Rays announced the releases of third baseman James Loney. He has a guaranteed $8 million salary.
In the marquee game of the day, the defending world champion Royals are playing host this evening to the team they beat in the World Series, the National League champion Mets. The pitching matchup is the same as the one that appeared in the final game of the Fall Classic, Matt Harvey for the Mets and Edinson Volquez for the Royals.
