HAMILTON COUNTY, TN (WRCB) As church members get ready for Wednesday night service, one local Baptist church is trying to get rid of a disturbing scene.

Hamilton County Deputies are investigating after vandals painted Satanic messages and symbols on the walls, sidewalk and back door of old Rugged Cross Baptist Church in Ooltewah.

Members of the congregation woke up to messages like, "love Satan" and "God isn't real", Wednesday morning.

" It's just a sickening thing to know our world has come to this right here," said member David McKee.

David McKee has been a member of Old Rugged Cross Baptist Church for 30 years, he says he's never seen anything like this.

" You know it's just the sign of the times, people are getting away from God and going with the devil," said McKee. "We hadn't been but we need to take a stand and do something about this mess here."

The graffiti covers the wall, handicap sidewalk and back door.

"They do stuff at night you know Satan is darkness so they do stuff at night and that means they're a coward," said member Ray McKee.

Members spent Wednesday trying to scrub off the paint, it's a work in progress.

" 710, 420 there has something to do with pot day and all that," said David McKee."They didn't do nothing to me, nothing to the congregation they done it to God and they are going to have to answer to him you know, they might not get judged down here but they will get judged I promise you."

The pastor tells Channel 3 he doesn't understand why anyone would do this, but he forgives and God does too.

" As long as they worship Satan, which they are Satan worshipers, you can tell by the Satan logo on the church," said McKee. " Until they find the true love which is God, they won't change."

Pastor Ricky Kesley has invited everyone in the community to participate in a special called prayer meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m.  Members say they will pray for justice and the suspect or suspects responsible.

The Hamilton County Sheriffs Department is investigating this as an "act of vandalism" not a hate crime. If you have any information that can help solve this case call the Sheriffs Department at : (423) 209-7000.
