Rhea County celebrates Opal Rector's 102nd birthday

Posted: Updated:

Rhea County has a program called SCAN, which stands for Senior Citizens Awareness Network, in which deputies and other volunteers check up on senior citizens across the county.  Wednesday, that check up included a cake.

Opal Rector turns 102 on Saturday and she's no stranger to the deputies. She's among 90 elderly residents who get regular visits from the deputies and volunteers.

The frequent checkups create relationships, awareness, and provide help for elderly neighbors when needed.  When the officers heard Opal was about to celebrate birthday number 102, they decided to do something special.

Ms. Rector says she appreciates the regular visits, and the peace of mind from knowing the officers and other volunteers are there when she needs them.

The SCAN program currently consists of 33 volunteers. They help connect the senior citizens with public service organizations who might provide help for them.
