Brainerd falls to Fulton 59-50 in AA state final

Posted: Updated:

The Brainerd Panthers, looking for their first state title in 24 years, took a tough loss Saturday night to the Fulton Falcons, 59-50 in the AA state final game.

Brainerd led 11-10 after the first quarter, but was held to only six more points in the rest of the first half.

The Panthers were trailing 31-17 at halftime, but then picked up the pace in the third and scored 23 points to make it 46-40 going into the fourth.

The Panthers pulled within one with three minutes remaining, but Fulton ended the game on a 10-2 run to claim its third state championship, and first since 2009.

"I think they brought a fight in the second quarter and we were a little sluggish in that second quarter" said Panthers head coach Levar Brown. "I feel that's the quarter that won the ball game for them, we pretty much one every other quarter. That quarter killed us and it was just a lack of focus and a lack of desire at that time."

Panthers' player Jesse Walker led all scores with 23 on the night. Fulton's Donovan Filer had 12, and Ron Davis III had 14.

Brainerd returns three seniors next season.
