Tennessee's first Toyota dealership celebrates 50 years in Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

Tennessee's first and Chattanooga's only Toyota dealer cut the ribbon on its newly remodeled dealership on Wednesday as it celebrated owner Bob McKamey's 50 years in the car business. Hundreds of local business leaders gathered along with several senior managers from the Toyota company.

McKamey's half century with Toyota is one of the longest partnerships for a car dealer in the country. He told stories at the event including one about how hard it was to sell this brand in the beginning. He only sold 11 cars in the first nine months.

"Each and every day is always different, it's been a wonderful ride," McKamey said Wednesday. "The people of Chattanooga have been so good to us."

His dealership, Capital Toyota, now employees about 200 people at the 5808 Lee Highway location. The company also has a used car lot across the street.

The McKamey name in Chattanooga is not just synonymous with the auto business. He pledged his support several years ago for the new McKamey Animal Shelter.
