UPDATE: Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused a popular North Georgia restaurant to go up in flames. On Wednesday the Golden Corral in Fort Oglethorpe caught fire which caused heavy damage to the building. Over 60 employees are now struggling to find new jobs.
It has been a rough start to 2016 for employees at The Golden Corral. Many are left without a job. Now owners are hoping to still provide a paycheck to employees as everyone eagerly awaits the restaurant's reopening.
Yellow caution tape blocks the entrance to The Golden Corral in Fort Oglethorpe. A popular eatery destroyed by an early morning fire.
“I got a phone call and text at 12:30 that the building was on fire. I rushed down here to check it out and sure enough, it was on fire. Lit up like a torch. Everything already was gone up,” said manager Scott Adkison.
Workers are now struggling to find jobs a difficult situation for the dozens of employees who depend on a paycheck. “People of all walks of life. Single moms, young families, women in their 50's and 60's who work and live day to day off the money they make here.”
The owners hope to help the members of their team affected by the fire. They are using the popular Go Fund Me website to reach out to the community, in hopes of raising enough money to help support to the 60 plus workers out of a job. “I just want to emphasize it is not for management or owners. It is literally for our staff, those who are lost and not understanding what to do next. Asking where to go next. I hope it’s a help supplement to them during this difficult time.”
Just a small gesture for the people who make The Golden Corral ... a family. “I hope my employees know I have tried. We can do whatever we can in the meantime. Hang tight, and we are doing what we can to get things open again.”
The time line for rebuilding the restaurant remains unclear. Managers say the building has to be demolished first.
