MURRAY COUNTY, GA (WRCB) -

A North Georgia grandmother is facing charges after her one-year-old grandson was found face down in a bathtub, badly burned by hot water. The boy died days later at a hospital.

The family said little Patrick was only on this earth for a year but his impact will remain forever.

Christmas at the Darnell household will difficult this year.

“One of those little boys, he just would make you smile. Just a bundle of joy,” said Marcus Carrell.

One-year-old Patrick Dewayne Darnell died Sunday evening at the hospital. Family members say his grandmother, Sharon Carrell, walked away from Patrick and his sister in an empty bathtub. Moments later, they say they heard a baby screaming. That is when family members found Patrick face down in the tub in scalding hot water.

“I don't think she did it intentionally," Carrell told Channel 3. "She was very protective over us when we were kids and my little niece Savannah, very protective over her, especially Patrick."

Patrick's uncle said he will miss the little things; the giggles; Patrick’s smile, and the joy he brought to so many.

“He would mess with my hat, whatever, my headpiece," Patrick's uncle said. "He was just a very playful, cheerful little boy. He will be missed.”

As Christmas approaches, presents for Patrick will remain wrapped up under the Christmas tree. But the family knows they will get through this difficult time together.

“It is going to be a little rough," Carrell said. "But a strong family always makes it through it.”

Funeral arrangements are still being finalized for Patrick.

His sister was not injured. Sharon Carrell, who had recently taken to Facebook to ask for prayers for her family, is charged with second degree murder, child cruelty, and providing false information.

Investigators said negligence is what led to the charges against her.
