PREVIOUS STORY: A Grundy County teacher is facing statutory rape charges.
Deputies arrested Tommy Andrews, 41, on Sunday and charged him with one count of aggravated statutory rape and one count of aggravated statutory rape by an authority figure.
“We received a complaint last week,” said Grundy County Sheriff Clint Shrum, who says his department presented the case to the district attorney’s office before charges were filed.
Investigators with the Grundy County Sheriff's Department were at the Swiss Memorial Elementary School Tuesday to learn more about the now suspended science teacher.
"We do have some evidence that we're looking at that we would consider hard evidence," Sheriff Clint Shrum said, "That can't be released at this point as far as to what that is."
"The victim is 14 years old," he said, "Not a current student of Andrews."
The police report says Andrews picked up the 14-year-old student from a friend's house and had sex with her in his truck.
Shrum says during the process of his department’s investigation his officers learned a complaint was made to the Department of Children’s Services about Andrews on May 7.
Andrews is a teacher at Swiss Memorial Elementary School, where he teaches science and social studies to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. Sheriff Shrum says he has been a teacher there for the past 12 years.
The Director of Grundy County Schools, Jessie Kinsey, says Andrews has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
The school is offering counseling to the student involved, and making resources available in case there are other potential victims.
"That has not come out yet. We're not saying that there has been or hasn't been, but no one has come to us yet and said that they have been a past victim," Sheriff Shrum said.
Andrews has been release from jail on a $60,000 bond. As part of the conditions of his bond, Andrews must wear a GPS monitoring device to ensure he stays away from the victim in the case.
