WHITFIELD COUNTY, GA (WRCB) -

Whitfield County deputies are investigating after finding an elderly woman's dog shot to death in her back yard.

Hazel Swinford, 86, called deputies after finding her 2-year-old Pitbull Terrier named Georgie dead in the back yard of her Tilton Road home Tuesday. The sheriff said it appears the dog had a shotgun wound.

"I just don't get how anybody could do that, you just oughta seen it. It was horrible," Hazel Swinford said. "That was a very cowardly thing to do. She was in a yard, fenced-in yard."

Swinford speculates someone came to her backyard to steal some lawn equipment when Georgie went into protection mode. She says that's when she thinks her dog was killed.

"Good Lord, she bled to death," Swinford said. "And I miss her, you know what I mean."

The deputy who responded took the dog to a local animal shelter to be disposed of properly. The sheriff says there's no leads and no suspects but that they'll continue to investigate.
