Double structure fire in Soddy Daisy appears suspicious but not arson

SODDY-DAISY, TN (WRCB) -

Fire crews in Soddy Daisy were busy overnight working a fire that included two abandoned residential structures.

The fire chief says the power has been cut off to the supposedly abandoned home but that it's evident someone was inside.

Chief Mike Guffey says there was a lit candle inside the home, plus empty beer cans and soda bottles litter the front yard. He said it's likely an accidental fire.

"Could've been transients, could've been somebody sleeping there who started a fire to keep warm with or some other nefarious means but I don't think it was arson at this time," Chief Guffey said. "We've ruled it as suspicious and undetermined."

Sale Creek Fire Department assisted Soddy Daisy in fighting the fire and Dallas Bay Fire Department was on standby.

"I think at one time we were flowing about 11,000 gallons a minute so it was quite the intensity," he said. "When you try and get one out and put one out at the same time, it's not that easy."

The exact cause is under investigation. Guffey said Tuesday morning the structure was still unsafe to enter with a chance for the roof to collapse.
