Scammmers posing as IRS agents pepper the TN Valley with phone calls

Posted: Updated:

A growing number of people in the Tennessee Valley have received phone calls from scammers who claim to be from the Internal Revenue Service.

Channel 3 has received multiple complaints about such calls over the past few days.

While the details of the scam vary, the IRS will never call to demand immediate payment or ask for a pre-paid debit card as payment.

Sometimes, scammers try to ‘phish” for information via email.

The scammers can even mimic the IRS Caller ID information, making it more difficult for you to discern if the call is real or not.

The IRS website explains that the agency contacts taxpayers via U.S. Mail, usually in the form of a bill.

Disputes over taxes are typically questioned or even appealed, says the IRS.

IRS will never:

  • Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill
  • Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe
  • Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card
  • Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone
  • Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying

If you receive such a call, do not share private or personal information (including your cell phone number) but call police or your local IRS office.
