CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -
UPDATE: With the old bridge successfully demolished over the weekend, work will continue on the Shepard Road interchange. TDOT says that the road was reopened by noon on Sunday. As part of Phase 2 of the project, traffic will use a one-lane signal controlled bridge on Shepherd Road through February, after which it will be back to two lanes.
PREVIOUS STORY: The construction of the new bridge on Shepherd Road over SR-153 by the Tennessee Department of Transportation will move into the next phase with the current bridge being demolished, according to a news release.
Starting Friday evening, November 20 at 8:00pm EST, the TDOT contractor will begin demolishing the current Shepherd Road Bridge over SR-153, and switching traffic to a portion of the newly-constructed bridge.
This will allow the contractor to begin construction on the second half of the new bridge.
The changes will conclude Monday morning, November 23 at 6:00am EST.
Additionally, SR-153 North and South beneath the bridge will be closed to all traffic during this work for the safety reasons. During this closure, SR-153 traffic will be required to utilize the Shepherd Road ramps.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol will assist with traffic control as necessary on the project.
The contractor for the $5.3 million project is Jones Brothers Contractors, LLC of Nashville, and the estimated completion date is on or before October 31, 2016.
