Bradley County Sheriff's Office believes an impending divorce led to a couple's murder-suicide

BRADLEY COUNTY, TN (WRCB) -

The Bradley County Sheriff's Office believes an impending divorce led to a couple's murder-suicide on Thursday night.

Ricky Randolph, 57, and his wife, Gloria, 56, were found shot to death inside a vacant home in the 100 block of Clear Lake Road in McDonald. Investigators say Randolph shot his wife in the head before turning the gun on himself.

According to Sheriff Eric Watson, the couple did not have a known history of domestic violence, but they were in the final stages of a divorce.

"They were in the middle of finalizing their divorce, and we believe that was what this was over," Watson said.

The shooting happened inside the home around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, but the couple did not live there. The home was vacant.

Investigators say the home belonged to Ricky Randolph's father, who died a year ago. The couple would feed and take care of the dogs he left behind, and that's why they were at the residence on Thursday night.

"We do know that he drove," Watson said. "It's unclear if she rode with him or rode with somebody else there."

The house sits near the back of a dead end street. Neighbors who were returning home at the time had to walk.

"There was probably every bit of 15 to 20 county cars," explained neighbor Marvin Catlett. "They had the road blocked off. I had to park my vehicle at the end of the road up here at the stop sign."

Family members told deputies that Ricky Randolph didn't own any firearms. Investigators are still looking into where the handgun came from.

The Sheriff says the department had not dealt with domestic violence calls with this couple in the past. The dogs the couple cared for were not hurt in the incident. We're told another family member will be taking care of them.
