UPDATE: A suspect in a church burglary gave Chattanooga police officers a challenge while he was being transported Tuesday morning.

Chattanooga police responded to a burglary in progress call at the City Church on 7122 Lee Highway.

When they arrived, suspect Jason Helton, 37, ran out of the church and was captured by police.

While he was being transported to the Hamilton County Jail, police say that Helton began to thrash around in the back of the patrol car, forcing officers to stop twice to restrain him.

When the police car was stopped the second time, and tried to escape. He then banged his head on the ground which required Hamilton County EMS to respond and treat Helton for the injury to his head.

Helton then tried to destroy the car’s interior and electrical wires.

His bizarre and combative behavior earned Helton a trip to a local hospital for an evaluation.

Helton was charged with Burglary, Resisting Arrest, and Destruction of Property.
