Roadrunner men place 2nd, women 6th in ASICS Sand Shark Invitational

HARDEEVILLE, SC  (dsroadrunners.com) - The Dalton State men's cross country team wrapped up the regular season Saturday with a close second place finish in the ASICS Sand Shark Invitational, hosted by the University of South Carolina at Beaufort.

There were 31 men's teams and 276 individual runners in the 8K event. Dalton State's Spencer Head was the individual champion with a time of 24: 21.34. He finished just ahead of Emmanuel's Kelvin Kirui (24:37.96).

NCAA Division III Berea College (KY) won the team championship with 72 points and an average time of 25:44.59.  Emmanuel had the numbers three through four runners in Emmanuell Kemmel, Logan McKenzie and Jeremy Johnson.

The Roadrunners posted 89 points and a very close average time of 25:46.54.

Paul Paterson came in at number 8 to have Dalton State's second best time (25:27.95).

Paul Schupp finished at 17th (25:58.40).  Dylan Smith was 30th (26:29.97). Parker Cook was 33rd (26:35.07). Dacosta Smith was 72nd (27:37.97) and Saddoth Fraire finished 80th (27:50.07)

Meanwhile, the Dalton State women's cross country team finished sixth of 28 teams on Saturday in the ASICS Sand Shark Invitational.

"I'm proud of our women's team," said Dalton State Co-Coach Margie Bruner. "They are peaking at the right time. We still have some work to do but everyone is determined and focused. Emily continues to be the team's inspiration."

The Roadrunners finished the morning with 199 points and an average team time of 19:33.70. Freshman Emily Poole finished fifth in leading DS runners with a time of 18:12.79.

Natalie Hensley finished 39th with a time of 19:40.21. Gloria Pascual was 46th 19:50.87. Mallory Edwards was right behind in 47th at 19:51. 19. Olivia Bird was 62nd in the run at 20:13.48

Jessica Brock (20:26.39) finished at 74th and Kuersten Gallivan (20:52.45) was 90th. There were 264 runners in the field.

Tennessee Wesleyan was fourth with 153 points and an average of 19:13.60. Southeastern University was just ahead of Dalton State with 188 points and an average time of 19:22.46.

The ASICS Sand Shark Invitational was the final regular season competition for Dalton State cross country teams before the SSAC Championships on November 6th at Choctaw Trails near Clinton, MS.
