CHATTANOOGA, TN (gomocs.com) -- The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team hits the highway to Greensboro, N.C., for a matchup with UNCG Friday at 6:00 p.m. UTC leads the Southern Conference after the first half of league play at 7-1, 18-3 overall.
"Not only do we have momentum, we have a lot of belief that we're not here just for the first half," head coach Travis Filar stated. "We want to be in this position in the second half, and we have a lot of confidence going into that."
Chattanooga is coming off a strong weekend in Maclellan Gym, with wins over ETSU (3-1) and Samford (3-0), extending the squad's winning streak at home to 10. The squad has won 14 of its last 15 matches no matter the location.
"It's great that our team has given themselves an opportunity to be where they are," said Filar. "It speaks to the leadership of our team, our seniors, our captains and everyone else following their lead."
The Mocs are first in the conference in assists per set (13.38), hitting percentage (.275) and kills per set (14.17). Sophomore Lauren Greenspoon (Houston, Texas) leads the SoCon and boasts a No. 10 national ranking in assists per set (11.61). Senior Catherine Chason (Alpharetta, Ga.) is nationally ranked at 50th for digs per set (4.79). Junior Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.) and senior Lauren Gainer (Boca Raton, Fla.) are both ranked nationally in hitting percentages at 60th (.367) and 74th (.358), respectively.
UTC beat the Spartans 3-1 in the first SoCon match of the season on Sept. 25.
"UNCG has a very dynamic and efficient offense similar to us," explained Filar. "They also dig a lot of balls like we do. I think the match will be won in the serve and pass game, and for us, it will be important to slow their offense down."
The Spartans are 15-8 and tied for third in the league at 5-3. After losing the team's first three conference matches, UNCG has racked up five wins in a row, including sweeps over Western Carolina, Furman and The Citadel. The Spartans lead the SoCon in digs per set (17.21).
Sophomore outside hitter Ashely Muench posted a double-double in UNCG’s last match against the Catamounts, with 16 kills and 11 digs. She paces the squad at 291 kills, averaging 3.78 per set ranking her second in the conference and 84th nationally. Senior Katherine Santiago is first in the league in digs per set (4.95), No. 36 in the country.
