Band of the Week: Polk County

Posted: Updated:

The band from Polk County High School is a small, but fiery bunch. We got them on video when their team was visiting Silverdale and they play so much in the stands, we had to interrupt their flow to get a song for Friday Night Football! Kimberly Witz and her students graciously obliged and rocked out a fan stands classic: "Land of a Thousand Dances." You may not know the title, but if you hear the first couple of bars, I guarantee you will be singing along.

Ms. Witz bragged on her group, repeating the fact that they are awesome. There are 22 in the Polk County Band this year, a typical year, she says, and there is an excited group of 14 in the lower grades who will fill out the ranks in the coming years. It is a pretty sweet gig, the band travels to all of the away games and has already competed in at least two competitions, so far: Band Jam at Sequoyah and the Bradley Classic where they took 2nd place in their division.

To make these trips and pay for buses and gasoline, they hold fund-raisers through the year. Where many programs sell pizzas, nuts and cheeses, or even candles, the Polk County program is trying something else...sheets.  Yes, high-quality bed sheets! If you are interested and would like to help out, get in touch with Ms. Witz at the Polk County Band Room: (423) 299-0078

You have just a couple more chances to catch the band in action, this year. If you get to see their half-time show, you will love it. Entitled An Asian Adventure, they play music from Korea, China, and Japan...including "Kung Fu Fighting." How can you go wrong with that? It is, as Ms. Witz said, an awesome group and we thank Polk County for being our Friday Night Football Band of the Week!
