CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (gomocs.com) --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team was unable to send its seniors off with a win, falling 2-1 to VMI Sunday afternoon at Finley Stadium in the home finale.
Chattanooga falls to 3-10-2 overall and 1-4-1 in Southern Conference action while VMI improves to 5-9 on the year and 1-4 in league play.
VMI scored twice in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Blake Cashin stepped in to intercept a pass between two Chattanooga players in the back field and quickly scored in the 10th minute to get the Keydets on the board first.
Later in the opening frame, Sydnie Bligh headed the ball toward the goal and Olivia Cotton got a foot on it inside the box. Chattanooga’s Molli Miller was able to make the save but couldn’t wrap it up and Cotton picked up the rebound and buried it in the net for a 2-0 lead at the 21:34 mark of the game.
In the secod half, the Mocs took advantage of a handball in the box and sophomore McKenzie Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) sliced the penalty kick past VMI’s keeper to cut the lead to one in the 61st minute.
The Keydets outshot Chattanooga 14-11 and 9-7 shots on goal advantage. UTC outshot VMI 8-5 in the second half and had a 6-2 corner kick advantage for the game. Miller made six seven saves while VMI’s Darien Dunham had six saves.
Prior to the game, the Mocs held Senior Day ceremonies for its eight seniors: Skylar Brewer, Sarah Ghale, Logan Higgins, Clare Latham, Loryn Queen, Lauren Thomas, Alanna Warrick and Hannah Wyatt.
Chattanooga will close out the regular season with three road matches beginning with Samford on Friday night in Birmingham. The game is set to kick off at 8 p.m.
