ONLY ON 3: Local nursing student finds gift between the pages

Posted: Updated:

Like many nursing students in their last year of school, Caitlyn Phillips spends a lot of time studying.

“You have to pass the big test. You go through all these little tests in school and think you’re done and then you have one more big one to take in order to your job,” she said.

Preparing for her state board, called the NCLEX, Phillips recently bought a practice test book from McKay’s Used Books. Little did she know, that book would hold more than just test material.

“There was a little bulge in it and I didn’t think about it. I opened it up and it was an envelope and it read, ‘To: A Future Nurse; From: A Nurse.’” She explained.

Inside she found a handwritten letter on notebook paper from someone who’s been in her shoes.

“This person was telling me, I know exactly what you’re going through and I’m telling you that you can do it. You might not feel like you can, but it’s there and you just have to take it one step at a time and give your best,” Phillips said.

These words, coming from someone who’s walked a similar path and knows exactly what it’s like to be a nursing student just trying to make it through school. Words that serve as a reflection of a nurse’s character.

“The most encouraging thing that I could have gotten at this moment, right when I needed it was that day,” she said.

Along with that letter, a gift card to Starbucks to help with the long hours of studying.

But one thing was missing -- a name.

“Whoever it was, I’m so thankful. But I don’t know who it is to actually thank them.”

We may never know who wrote that letter, but that’s okay. It still serves as a good reminder to pay it forward, which Phillips tells me she plans to do.
