UPDATE: Meigs County inmate back behind bars

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: A Meigs County inmate is back behind bars after he was found at a mobile home in Marion County.

Cody Ratcliff was able to escape after a gate was left unlocked near the weightlifting area.  Authorities are investigating how the gate was left open, said Meigs County Sheriff Jackie Melton.

Ratcliff was taken into custody Wednesday in Marion County and later transported back to Meigs County.

Authorities in Meigs County are asking the public to be on the lookout for an inmate who escaped from the county jail on Sunday.

Cody Ratcliff escaped from the jail Sunday morning during inmate recreational time.

Meigs County Sheriff Jackie Melton says it’s still unclear how Ratcliff was able to escape and that matter is being investigated. He says the department has notified the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation of the escape.

Melton says Ratcliff, who was in jail on a theft charge, is not dangerous, but he asks for anyone who sees him to contact the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office at (423) 334-5268.
