UTC football player suspended following arrest

Posted: Updated:

A UTC football player has been suspended indefinitely following a weekend arrest.

Chattanooga Police arrested Vantrel McMillan, 21, on Sunday at a party on Chamberlain Avenue.

McMillan is charged with possessing a firearm while under the influence, disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

According to court records, police were called multiple times about loud music and people walking the street. An officer found McMillan in the street with an open container. The officer noted McMillian was highly intoxicated. McMillan became confrontational when asked to stop drinking from the open bottle of liquor. As the officer attempted to put handcuffs on McMillan he reached in his pocket pulling a handgun.

"I do not believe he meant to harm police, but he was too intoxicated to know what to safely do with (the gun)," wrote the officer in a report. "His actions were very risky."

The .40 caliber handgun McMillan was carrying had a full magazine and a bullet in the chamber.

UTC officials tell Channel 3 McMillan, who is on the 2015 roster as a defensive lineman, is "suspended indefinitely" for violating team rules. UTC officials would not comment further on the police investigation or the charges McMillan is facing.
