New crosswalks to help pedestrians cross multi-lane streets

Posted: Updated:

The Chattanooga Department of Transportation will install Pedestrian Refuge Offset Crosswalks.

The crosswalks will be located at Market St. at W 25th St and Broad Street at W 32nd St. on Tuesday.

A Pedestrian Refuge Island is an intersection safety design used to break a crossing into two phases.

They reduce crossing delays, provide space for slower pedestrians to safely stop and minimizing impediment to other traffic.

Offset Crossings add a turn in the crosswalk to position pedestrians to face oncoming traffic.

This is an added safety feature as the angled crosswalk can increase the pedestrian's awareness of traffic.

These are techniques proven to reduce vehicle-pedestrian crash frequency and severity on multi-lane streets.

This is another improvement by CDOT to fulfill the Mayor's Challenge for safer people and safer streets.
