Man says his dentures went missing at Erlanger

Posted: Updated:

Ben Hawkins says he has no doubt he had his teeth in when he went to Erlanger Health System last month.

“I kept asking them about my dentures, my top teeth you know, and they kept giving me the run around, run around,” said Hawkins.

Hawkins says he had a severe case of acid reflux that required an ambulance ride to Erlanger.

“My daughter was steady because she was in the ICU while they were trying to put the tube in my throat. They were trying to get the dentures out to put the tube in my throat,” said Hawkins.

Hawkins was unconscious. He said when he woke up without dentures several days later he asked for them. They were nowhere to be found.
“I said you are not going to pay for my top teeth, my dentures, and she said no,” said Hawkins.

Channel 3 reached out to Erlanger Health System regarding their reimbursement policy.

"Our policy requires an investigation confirm that the patient had an item while at Erlanger and that the hospital was responsible for the lost item," said Erlanger Health System.

“I’m on a fixed income. I only get one thousand a month,” said Hawkins.

Hawkins went ahead and purchased new dentures for $489. He says he wants to be reimbursed. Erlanger cited patient privacy law for not giving more detail on this case.

“Pay, pay my bill, I already bought them. Just be responsible and pay for what I think they should pay for,” said Hawkins.

Hawkins says he's been wearing dentures since 2003.
