UPDATE: The scrapyard fire is at Mill Direct International, located at  2100 Rossville Avenue.

Mill Direct is self-described as a full scope recycling company. Its website calls it a “one stop shop” for recycling needs. They recycle metals, electronic waste, plastic and paper.

The fire broke out just before 2:00 p.m. Thursday.  The plume of think smoke could be seen miles away. Four companies with the Chattanooga Fire Department battled the blaze.   Firefighters reports the burning pile was made up mostly of petroleum-based products, such as rubber, foam and plastics.

Firefighters used water to suppress the fire, then use machinery to remove layers of scrap from the burning pile. This went on until the fire was completely out.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion, no other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
