East Side Elementary School is celebrating the opening of a lab created with a  $25,000 grant from The Leonore Annenberg School Fund for Children.

The school's READ 180 Lab has been upgraded to help students become strong readers and writers.

In addition, hundreds of non-fiction books have been added to the library to improve the variety of materials available.

The grant was obtained with the assistance of the Public Education Foundation.

It is the school's second Annenberg grant, making it one of the few schools to earn that distinction.

Principal Stephanie Hinton emphasizes the school's predominantly Hispanic population requires extra effort on literacy and language.

East Side was named a Tennessee Reward School in 2012 and 2015.
