MOBILE, AL (dsroadrunners.com) – The Dalton State volleyball team used strong net play to force the University of Mobile (9-0, 2-0) into a fifth set before falling three sets to two on the Rams home court.
The Roadrunners started strong and never trailed in the first set, building an early 15-8 lead. Mobile came back to tie the score at 22 and 23 before Dalton State put the set away, 25-23. The Rams controlled most of the second set with Dalton State only leading once (2-1). Mobile went on to answer, 25-12.
Dalton State scored the first point of the third set, but the Roadrunners would never again see the lead. The Rams took the set going away, 25-14. Mobile got off to a 10-3 lead in the fourth set, but DS would come back to take their first lead of the game, 22-21. The game was tied at 24 when the Roadrunners scored the final two points for the set win, 26-24.
Mobile won the deciding set, 15-7. Kianna Delaney tallied 16 kills and 11 digs for Dalton State. Marta Guntin had nine kills and 13 digs. Savannah Nelson added nine digs and four digs. Michala Askew had 27 assists and 17 digs. Rafaella Martin Petrunko had 13 assists and a dozen digs. Karly Newman had 15 digs.
“It was a much better day for us,” said Dalton State Coach Bruna Langner. “We had some great moments and we played pretty solid on those two sets that we won. Mobile is such a great team.”
The Roadrunners drop to 3-5 on the season and 0-2 in Southern States Athletic Conference play.
