UTC police investigating sexual assault on campus
UTC Police are investigating an alleged sexual assault that reportedly happened on campus.
The incident was reported to UTC police in August and an alert was sent to students.
“A sexual assault was reported on August 24, 2015 that occurred at Stophel Apartments,” states the alert sent to students, sent the same day the assault was reported. “It is believed that the alleged offender and the victim know each other.”
A spokesperson for UTC says no criminal charges have been filed and the case is still under investigation.
“I can confirm that UTC Police are investigating a report of a sexual assault of a female student by a male student on campus,” said Chuck Cantrell.
“The case is also being investigated by our Dean of Students Office for student judicial purposes. If criminal charges are filed, those charges would be public information; the results of a student judicial case are part of the student's academic record and considered private by law.”
According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations, this is second sexual crime to be reported on UTC’s campus since 2010. An on-campus rape was reported to police in 2014.
